Gerard Stricher

Painting with Alan Reingold this semester--
It's a six hour painting class where we paint nude models and critique each others works.
Last week, Alan taught me how to mix and apply color. I wasn't happy at all with where I was going with my nude model painting... and I didn't know what I was doing wrong. Alan came over and started mixing dozens of colors (that I thought would never go together) and left me with a perfect mix of light and dark skin tone. It felt so inventive..yet the steps were so specific-- It was like cooking a tasty meal. The new color pallet changed the mood of my canvas and it made my painting come alive. It's definitely effecting my design work as well.

装苑

Rose Sunglasses

Cat Face Mask
Eye Neck Piece
Skull Straw Hat
Photo: Takeshi Hanzawa
Hair & Makeup: Masayoshi Okudaira
Styling: Kyoko Fushimi

They described the character they wanted me to play through this painting:

"Remorse or Sunken Sphinx" by Salvador Dali

I knew Dali and I had a special bond...!!! How cool would it be to live in his paintings.

I'm also a huge fan of 装苑 magazine and Maiko Takeda's works.  It was such a great honor to work with them! The images turned out beautifully-- I'm sorry about the poor scanning quality. Please check them out in stores!!

more works by Maiko Takeda:

 装苑武田麻衣子さんの作品もとても好きなので
 一緒に仕事ができた事をとてもうれしく思います!
ダリの絵の様なイメージを想像してると言われた時はテンションが上がりました。
ダリの世界に住んでみたい!

Paintings I worked on for the earthquake relief
It took me a while to post these up..
自然/人をテーマにした作品です。

The appreciation of nature is a prevailing theme we see in Japanese culture.  From Shintoism to the obvious adoration of the sun in the national flag, we have throughout history strived to achieve an "oneness" with the elements.  Even in the face of natural disaster, we are not a people that posts haste in condemning the elements, but instead strive to understand them, to coexist with them, and are left in awe of its wonders, destructive as they may sometimes be.  Let us in these times of crisis adore the beauty it can also bring.
